British Railways Engineering Training Manuals
We have been involved with railway traction and rolling stock for many years - our Managing Partner was an engineering apprentice at the Works Training School in Swindon - and over this time we have accumulated a large amount of traction and rolling stock training manuals. Most of these were produced by British Railways Western Region's Diesel Training School. This was based at the Apprentice Training School in Dean Street (now demolished) and latterly at The Mill in Bristol Street, Swindon (now part of UTC).
We have also acquired lots of maintenance instructions, driving instructions and other paper documents relating to railway operation - these will be included here too.
All these paper documents have started to show their age, so we have decided to scan and clean them. Each one takes quite a while to do, and we have quite a lot! More will appear here as we complete them, so keeping checking back.
We work with quite a few heritage railways (see our Clients section), providing consultancy and training in areas such as risk assessment, incident investigation, data recorder analysis, maintenance error management, competence management, operational readiness and operational processes. We are aware that developing and maintaining the competence of the next generation of rolling stock engineers is challenging and there appears to be very little information available on the internet (unlike driver manuals, which seem to be readily accessible). We are making these documents available free of charge, but please contact us if you would like to make a donation to one of the charities we support, as a gesture of your gratitude.
We're also a Commercial Partner of the Heritage Railway Association, providing consultancy support to member organisations.
Please remember that the training documents should be used as a guide only, as they were not necessarily updated as modifications were made to the rolling stock!
