Cognitive Interview Technique

The Cognitive Interview technique is a specialised questioning technique used to help witnesses retrieve information after an incident.

Duration

This is a one day workshop.

We can also provide focused coaching sessions to help investigators refresh their skills and knowledge, or to help them through their first investigation. See our investigator coaching section, or contact us using the form on the right.

Who should attend?

This workshop has been developed for anyone whose role requires them to carry out interviews as part of incident investigations. Ideally, delegates will have attended our investigator training before taking this course.

What will you learn?

The training typically includes:
  • The psychology of cognition – why do we not simply recall events as a matter of course
  • Testing the delegates own memory and understanding techniques that they use to recall information
  • Understanding when to gather crucial evidence to avoid forgetfulness
  • Techniques used to structure interviews
  • Helping the interviewee paint a mental picture with their own thoughts
  • Understanding how an interviewer’s body language can influence the interviewee
  • Recording evidence whilst looking for the interviewee’s body language
  • Using the techniques in simulated situations
  • ‘Quick wins’ when faced with a situation where evidence needs gathering

Customised training - in your workplace

We can customise any of our training courses to address the specific issues faced by your industry or business. We will run the training at your workplace so you save on travel and accommodation costs.
