Training and competence
Evaluating training strategy and programmesWe can help you evaluate whether training is making (or is likely to make) a positive difference to the performance of the people that go on it. We can provide support ranging from reviewing training programmes through to developing competence-based training to be delivered either by us or your own trainers.
Developing and maintaining competenceWe can develop and implement risk-based management systems for developing, maintaining and monitoring the competence of your workforce. These systems can be supplemented by software provided by our associate business to help plan and record competence assessments.
Part of our service is to identify tasks where skill fade is likely to occur, allowing you to focus refresher training on the things that really matter. This is likely to reduce the burden of refresher training which typically focuses on fairly routine tasks, or at least reduce the frequency that the skills need to be refreshed. When designing training we use a risk-based approach that makes sure that the learning is focused on the activities that carry significant risk, or where ‘skill fade’ is likely to be high. Railway, metro and tramway competence management systemsRail, metro and tram operators and maintainers are required to develop, maintain and assess the competence of individuals carrying out safety critical work, on an ongoing basis (regulations 23 and 24 of the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations, 2006).
We have considerable experience in designing, implementing and auditing competence management systems for safety critical work. Standards that define competent performanceUsing our specialist analytical tools we work with clients to define the performance and knowledge criteria that define 'competent' performance for the various roles in their business. The criteria are developed from job and task analysis and are therefore to the specific tasks that are required in the organisation's operating environment.
The competence standards are the foundation for everything that is then created to help people develop and maintain their competence: training programmes, training support materials, assessment programmes, evaluation frameworks and audit requirements. Training materialsOur team has significant experience of operations in engineering, transportation, construction and fire and rescue services, amongst others. We also have graphic design, video and animation specialists so that we are able to design and create training programmes and support materials for normal, degraded and emergency situations.
