Accident investigator training

Hazards exist in all workplaces and in most situations there are effective measures in place to control them. However, incidents and accidents do occasionally occur – indicating that  some of these controls are not as effective as they should be.
Learning lessons from accidents and incidents is vital to reduce losses to your organisation. Our accident investigator training draws on the guidance published by  the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in their accident investigation guidance (HSG245) to develop foundation skills in accident investigation.

Duration

The accident investigator training can be either a one or two day workshop, depending on your needs and the prior experience of the delegates.

Accidents and incidents are (fortunately) rare events, which can mean that there are few opportunities for practising the skills. We can also provide focused refresher training to help investigators refresh their skills and knowledge, or to help them through their first investigation. See our investigator coaching section, or contact us using the form on the right.

We also offer a more advanced accident investigation training course for experienced accident investigators, as well as a root cause analysis training course for incident investigation techniques that can be applied to quality problems as well as safety events.

Who should attend?

The accident investigator training workshop has been developed for anyone whose role requires them to carry out investigations into accidents and incidents.

What will you learn?

The main areas covered by this workshop are:
  • roles and responsibilities of accident investigators
  • the sequence of activities in an accident investigation
  • preserving short-life evidence
  • an introduction to interviewing techniques
  • causes of human error
  • techniques for identifying immediate and underlying causes
  • making effective recommendations, and
  • writing an investigation report in plain English.

Delegates will receive an accident investigator handbook as part of the workshop to help them recall accident investigation techniques when they carry out their first investigation.

An accident investigation report template can also be supplied (in Microsoft Word format),
tailored to suit your organisation.
