DO NOT READ WHILST WALKING IN THE STREETFrom the 1934 Wills Cigarettes 'Safety First' album.
"Do not read whilst walking in the street, for, besides the probability of colliding with other pedestrians, or with lamp-posts, pillar boxes etc., there is the possibility that you may unknowingly walk into the roadway at a cross road, and collide with a vehicle, the driver of which has been unable to avoid you (see picture). Before crossing a road look out for approaching traffic, and in a busy street make use of subways, islands or special crossing places. Where there is a policeman on point duty take advantage of the control to cross when the appropriate line of traffic is held up." |
